More on Expert Sites
Hi Everyone
This is your almost weekly newsletter from Links are Blue and Free Text Links. It is sent out to all our customers and subscribers every week if I am not too busy. Please feel free to use any of the content on your web pages and to forward this to any friends that may need SEO help.
This week I would like to talk a little more about the subject of Expert Sites. I have put together a list of Do's and Do Not's when you create your expert site.
DO:
Grab the top 10 links from Google, Yahoo, MSN and the OPEN Directory project and any other knows Expert Site on your topic and then compress them down to the most popular 7 or 9 or 11 links when averaged. Make it an odd number because 10 just looks like a feed of some kind and not a real link.
Sprinkle in a few other sites you consider good but may not be listed as highly yet for whatever reason. These links should be not be copied directly using the same anchor text and description the search engines use but should be your own unique Anchor/Title text along with a unique description.
You want these links to appear like you wrote them because you liked them not because the Search Engines think they are hot. That way when your site is high in the rankings and a human from Google comes to look at your site he will say... yep that's real.
DO NOT:
Do not use a php, cgi or other program to just query a search engine and paste the resulting links to your page. Even though the source code of the page will look like it is straight html the search engines catch onto this very fast.
DO:
Create new content for the site. I know this is a pain and is costly but it works well. Content may not be King any longer but fresh new content is certainly a part of the Royal Court.
One easy and fairly cheap way to do this is to post a notice at a local college that you will pay 5 bucks for 400 to 500 word papers and 10 bucks for 900 to 1000 word ORIGONAL papers about a particular subject.
Make certain that they understand it needs to be unique so that they don't just start searching the net and making article copies. You can also prevent this by running your content through one of the duplicate content checkers out there before you post it.
Also if you plan to post those articles on the net to get more hits from article sites where other webmasters can post their content, make sure Google has the article on your page indexed BEFORE you post it somewhere else. The last thing you want to do is pay for new content, then post it somewhere that gets indexed faster then you, and they get credit for the new content and you get hit with a duplicate content penalty.
DO NOT:
Grab indexed articles from other websites to use as filler on your site. The search engines do not like that at all. The ONLY time you should ever do that is if an article is so ON TARGET to the point you are trying to make that it adds to and reinforces what you are trying to say.
DO:
Add an RSS feed to your site so people can subscribe to your new content. Maybe even a couple feeds so different sections of your site can have their own feeds. Make sure you add a ping program too so that your system will notify all the engines and conglomerating services when you update.
DO NOT:
Grab RSS feeds and use them as NEWS and content for your site. Once again some programs make it appear that this is just pasted in content but the search engines can easily tell its a feed that has probably been copied on hundreds of websites.
A lot of people emailed me to take a look at their expert site designs this past two weeks and these were the primary things I saw that need corrected on a lot of the sites.
