Alias Command and Hosted Pages
Hi Everyone
This is your almost weekly newsletter from Links are Blue and Free Text Links. It is sent out to all our customers and subscribers every week if I am not too busy. Please feel free to use any of the content on your web pages and to forward this to any friends that may need SEO help.
Hosted Pages:
I have been experimenting with these style pages for a couple years now and I think its time I explained what they are and how they work.
A Hosted page is a unique page I can set up on a server to appear as a real html page. The difference is it shows up on every domain on the server. To do this I use an alias command in the server configuration. If you have your own servers you can look up through any search engine how to use it.
A simple alias command looks like this:
Alias /xyz "/var/www/cgi-bin/def.pl"
In this case if a request for the /xyz directory comes in the server runs the def.pl program you have copied copied into the /var/www/cgi-bin directory and send the results out to every domain on the server as http://www.abc.com/xyz
It can also look like this for a file:
Alias /xyz.html "/var/www/home/abc.php"
This opens the file abc.php located in the /var/home directory as calls it xyz.html when it displays the contents of the file.
One use that will make your life a lot easier is using it for your robots.txt file. You can create one file on your server and let every domain call that file using the code below. That way when you set up a new site you don't have to worry about creating one in each domain root directory.
Alias /robots.txt "/var/www/home/robots.txt"
One other thing to remember is that although beyond the scope of this newsletter you can set the server so if a hard file with the same name exists within the domain it will run that first. You can also set it up so that it has a variety of default configurations. Like looking for an index.html file first and if it doesn't find it it looks for an index.htm next. You can then alias a file called index.htm and your visitors will never get a file not found error.
Although all these are useful they are not nearly as useful as knowing that if you take a well on-page optimized web page. Say the first page on your site. With all the links pointed to the full url address and images pulling the same way and place that page on several hundred sites that either you do not own or have registered as private and on separate IP addresses it will usually give your site a huge boost in the SE Rankings.

I am thinking that $ 500.00 per year per hosted page is about the right price although if you have a specific project in mind, email me and maybe we can make you a better deal since I am just getting started with the commercialization of this product.
