So why are they different? Actually there is a good reason. The revelancy of the words are determined by what people are typing into a search engine and what they click on from the results.
So if you start your search with SEO and click on something about Search Engine Optimization. To the computer they are 2 different words. They do not understand that they mean exactly the same thing although the search engine programs realize that they are very similar.
So if we look at the words and phrases we see that most people who type in SEO wind up either typing in or clicking on something that says Search Engine Optimization.
We also see that people who start out by typing in search engine optimization wind up typing in or clicking on somethng that says Search Engine Marketing.
So as you can see choosing the correct primary phrase and then finding the related phrases to it, is very important. A lot of investigation is required to figure out what people actually type into a search engine then just what you want them to type.
So many people make the big mistake of putting their web site name or url in the Title. Thats probably the single most important place for key phrases to the search engines. There is limited space there, Google only looks at the first 60 characters and Yahoo looks at the first 80. So why waste that space with something people will never search for. If they already knew your URL then they would just go directly to your site. So unless you are Ford or Coke or some other major brand use your main targeted phrases there.
One thing that does work well is to create an informative page for not only your primary phrase but for all of the most important related phrases.
